There are three faction to choose from while playing New World: Syndicate, Marauders, and Covenant, and each one has differences that will shape the way that you play the game.
Factions are a big part of the MMORPG genre, appearing in titles like World of Warcraft, The Elder Scrolls: Online, and New World is no different.
On the island of Aeternum, the game introduces three groups to opt-in to, each with its own aesthetic, armor, and quests.
We’re going to break down each faction in New World and the differences between them.
New World factions
The three different factions in New World are Syndicate, Covenant, and Marauders. Players will be given the option to choose between the three after completing a series of quests and reaching Level 10.
Each features their own color scheme, along with distinct lore to fit into your particular fantasy:
Faction | Description |
Syndicate | The Syndicate is a secretive organization of boundless guile and intellect in search of forbidden knowledge to usher in a new age of enlightenment. |
Covenant | The Covenant is a fanatical order that has charged itself with cleansing the land of heretics and defilers so that its true holy nature can flourish and justice can be restored. |
Marauders | The Marauders are a ruthless military force bent on establishing a free nation where anyone with the strength to do so can prosper and profit. |
New World Faction Benefits
Being a member of a Faction comes with a host of benefits for you. All the Factions have been created equally, so all players get the same benefits from their Faction. One of the first main benefits to being in a Faction is access to Companies.
These are New World’s answer to clans or guilds. Large groups of players from the same Faction can join a Company to stay organised and work together. Players inside Companies can donate money into a Company Treasury, and Companies are needed for declaring Wars.
One of the other major Faction benefits is that you’ll be able to participate in New World’s PvP. As a Faction member you can Flag yourself for PvP in any settlement, which means players from other Factions will be able fight you for Faction influence. You can Flag yourself to patrol and defend a region or invade enemy territory to undermine their influence.
In terms of the more player-centric aspects of Faction membership, players will be able to complete Faction missions and access the Faction shop. These missions will contribute to the influence of your Faction. But you’ll also benefit personally through earning Faction Tokens and increasing your Rank.
This will allow you to buy better gear in your Faction’s shop with your Faction Tokens and other currencies. It’s worth noting that all Faction shops are the same in terms of quality. The appearance of each Faction’s gear is the only thing that changes.
As a member of a dominant Faction in home territory, you’ll also benefit from cheaper fast travel, lower Workshop costs, and can upgrade your settlements through quests.

New World Faction Gear
The New World gives new players an easy option to gear their characters while leveling with faction armor sets. At level 10 players decide which faction they will join – Marauder, Covenant, or Syndicate, and unlock their corresponding faction associate.
After completing quests given by the associate, players accumulate currency. They can then use to purchase faction armor sets that correspond to their current level.
The tiers of faction armor available for purchase from the associate are:
- Adept: level 15 to 24
- Scrivener: level 25 to 39
- Chronicler: level 40 to 54
- Alchemist: level 55 to 60
New World Faction Armor Sets
The only cosmetic difference between faction armor sets are the color schemes used on the fabrics that correspond to the assigned faction. Players are able to purchase all available weapons in-game through the faction associate, along with full sets of light, medium, and heavy gear that can be mixed and matched.
Players can also purchase runes and seals from the associate that allow them to change assigned attribute stats on their gear for a more customizable gearing experience. This allows DPS, healers, and tanks to run light, medium, or heavy armor without sacrificing desired attribute points that contribute to overall DPS, healing, or survivability.
New World factions differences
While the differences between New World’s factions are typically minimal, your first choice should be made carefully, as you’ll have to wait 120 days before being able to change to another.
Players looking to align with a mage-like group would be right at home with the Syndicate; those wanting to fight for glory would be better suited to the Marauders, and The Covenant faction is perfect for those looking to take on a Support or Defensive build.
Essentially, the only differences between the three are:
- The faction’s lore
- Faction-specific gear
- Player Companies that are associated with a particular faction
- The faction’s particular theme and color scheme
- Unique faction quests
Which faction to choose in New World
With all this said, the faction you should choose will depend on which team you want to associate yourself with.
If your friends are all aligned with Syndicate, for example, it’s worth joining them to ensure you can play all of the game’s content together throughout Aeternum.
There’s no option to do PVP within your own faction, however, so if you’re looking to spar with your friends, it could be worth having them join an opposing team.
Which is best faction New World?
Even though the Syndicate is the most popular faction in New World, all factions have similar designs and offer the same benefits to its players.
You technically won’t be at a disadvantage if you choose a specific faction over the other.
However, if you are someone who cares about the popularity of factions, then the Syndicate is the most popular, closely followed by the Marauders.
How to change factions in New World
It is possible to switch faction in New World. Despite this, there are some rules if you do decide to make the switch:
- You must wait at least 120 days (around 4 months),
- You cannot change to whichever one currently holds the most territory.
New World Faction Reputation Cap
In New World, players have a set Faction reputation for each of the five ranks they can earn in their faction. Currently, the max faction reputation cap for the final rank is 49k reputation.
When players hit this reputation cap, they will not earn any more reputation, as they have reached the final rank. However, if players are a lower rank, they will need to wait until they level their current rank to the next highest rank in the game.
They cannot earn reputation points from that point on, and once they reach the cap, all reputation points they earn will be removed. That said, here’s the complete list of all faction reputation caps in New World:
Faction Rank | Max Reputation |
---|---|
Faction Rank One | You can’t earn rep with this rank |
Faction Rank Two | The max cap for the second rank is 3k |
Faction Rank Three | The max cap for the third rank is 11k |
Faction Rank Four | The max cap for the fourth rank is 26k |
Faction Rank Five | The max cap for the last rank is 49k |
How to raise faction rank in New World?
If you want to raise your faction rank in New World, you will need to follow the faction questline in the game. With certain quests, you will be able to unlock higher faction ranks by completing them. Upon ranking up, you will also earn tons of new items bought with faction tokens.
