In a heartbreaking incident that unfolded on Wednesday night, West Palm Beach witnessed a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 18-year-old Kelvi McCray. The assailant, identified as 19-year-old Keisean Woodrow Shaw, shot McCray while she was on a FaceTime call with three friends. The tragic event culminated in a murder-suicide, leaving the community shocked and grieving.
Kelvi McCray Died In West Palm Beach Shooting
The shooting occurred around 9:45 p.m. inside a residence in the 1400 block of 13th Street near North Australian Avenue. McCray’s mother, who witnessed the horrifying incident, promptly called 911, stating, “Her boyfriend came in and shot her, my baby dead.” A neighbor also reported the incident, mentioning, “We heard the gunshots in the house. So, the son ran, and when I ran to the house, I couldn’t get in.”
Upon arrival, West Palm Beach police found McCray with multiple gunshot wounds to her head, back, and neck. Shaw, the ex-boyfriend, was discovered with a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the living room. The police report revealed that McCray was Shaw’s ex-girlfriend, and despite their breakup, he continued to reside in the same house.
Before the fatal shooting, Shaw had been on the police radar as he had reportedly threatened McCray at gunpoint just a day before the tragic incident. West Palm Beach Police Public Information Officer Mike Jachles stated, “We knew what kind of car he was in; we knew who we were looking for, but he just eluded us and tragically returned.”
The police had pursued Shaw for 5 miles the day before the shooting but eventually discontinued the chase. This information sheds light on the attempts made by law enforcement to apprehend the suspect before the devastating events unfolded.
As news of the tragic incident spread, friends and family expressed their sorrow online, posting tributes to McCray. Known for her involvement in sports and modeling, McCray had a significant impact on the community. The loss of a young life in such a senseless act of violence has left the community grappling with grief.
