Who Is John Okafor?
After facing financial difficulties following his father’s death in 1974, Mr Ibu worked tirelessly, doing menial jobs in Sapele to support himself and his family. From being a hairstylist to venturing into photography, his journey eventually led him to the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu.
However, it was in Lagos during the 1990s that Mr Ibu’s life took a turn. Homeless and stranded with only N20, he stumbled upon a movie audition, where he crossed paths with Pete Edochie. The rest, as they say, is history.

Mr Ibu’s outstanding portfolio includes iconic films such as “Mr Ibu” (2004), “Police Recruit” (2003), and “Keziah” (2007). His spontaneous comedic genius, akin to Nkem Owoh, captivated audiences without the need for a script.
Health Crisis and Personal Struggles
In the months leading up to his death, Mr Ibu faced challenging times both health-wise and personally. In February 2023, he openly discussed the struggles in his fifth marriage to Stella Marris. Additionally, a diagnosis of blood clotting in his leg and subsequent amputation left the once-lively comedian in distress.

With a career spanning over 300 movies, a stint in music, and a unique style that defined an era, Mr Ibu’s legacy will undoubtedly outlive him. The Minister’s statement, referring to his loss as ‘one death, too many,’ reflects the profound impact Mr Ibu had on the Nigerian movie industry and the hearts of the nation.
In the words of Emeka Rollas, President Actors Guild of Nigeria, “Mr Ibu is remembered as one of Nigeria’s most effortlessly funny and beloved comic actors of all time.” As the curtains fall on this comedic icon, his legacy lives on, inspiring generations of comic actors and bringing laughter to the hearts of those who cherished him.
